Whether you are a big organization or an independent creative, at some point you’ll want to document an event or a special occasion. The real struggle comes when having to choose from a myriad of photographers. How to make the right decision?

Essentially, it all boils down to style, quality and who you connect with. For me, forming a connection is of the most important factors as it’s the base to build your working relationship on, allowing clear communication to flow through. As your photographer, when we’re on the same page, we’ll naturally find common mindsets and talk openly, helping me understand what is most vital for you to be documented, as that’s something I always have in mind.

As a sociable introvert (yes, it’s possible) and a curious observer, I love finding a connection with people. I like to observe and make a note of the daily small details; someone’s smile, how they hold their coffee, what shadows paint …

It’s these kinds of elements my photography embodies as I want to encourage people to notice routine and all the ordinary moments we tend to overlook.

There’s no better feeling when your client gives you space and the creativity to do that. That’s why I’ve loved photographing Nostalgia Parties for the past two years. And even when shooting for more upscale organizations such as the European University Cyprus, I’m still able to let my quirkiness and attention to detail capture an event.

How I got started…

My dad got me my first camera when I was in my late teens so I could tag along on his photography outings. I spent the majority of those years pointing my camera in my friends’ faces.
At university I started being more playful with it, going off Program mode and flirting with manual settings (with a lot of failed attempts). It was during my year abroad in Spain and Panama that I discovered I loved photographing the streets and its stories. It was a way for me to understand a new place I was living in, its culture and its people.
Today, I take my dad on photo walks, discuss angles & composition and brainstorm creative ways to expand this passion.
After all, he is the backbone of Eleni Philippou Photography.
